In the next few years the planet now looks set to sail past the 1.5 degrees Celsius warming target set out in the Paris Agreement in 2015, and quite likely past the upper boundary of 2 degrees Celsius by 2050. So, is it now time to give up and admit defeat? Not according to an increasingly large cohort of energy transition analysts. They argue that with the rapidly reducing cost of renewables and energy storage we now face a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity for human advancement. So, how do they reach that conclusion then?
