A Lancaster County blacksmith built a wind turbine in 1938 for the equivalent of $120. Three generations later, it’s still spinning and his family still pays zero dollars a month for electricity. The U.S. Department of Agriculture published the exact plans in 1940, handed them out to half a million rural families, and then quietly pulled them from circulation once the power companies finished wiring the countryside.
While most Americans now pay an average of $173 per month for electricity, around 370,000 Amish people across the Midwest are running freezers, water pumps, workshop lights, and entire dairy operations on machines that cost less than a single month of your power bill. The turbine is a vertical-axis helical design that stands about eight feet tall, looks like a twisted ribbon, and catches wind from any direction without complex electronics or yaw mechanisms. It starts spinning at wind speeds as low as four miles per hour and keeps spinning in gusts that would tear conventional turbines apart. The design was patented in 1926 by French engineer Georges Darrieus, but while the rest of America got wired up by the Rural Electrification Administration between 1935 and 1953, the Amish preserved and refined it because it was the only way they could run a milk cooler without connecting to the public utility system. By 1955, when 96 percent of American farms had grid power and the small wind industry had been wiped out, only two groups were still building these machines: the Amish in the Midwest and stubborn Texas ranchers who couldn’t get the grid out to their property.
