India has achieved a major clean energy breakthrough with the world’s first hydrogen production plant powered by nuclear reactor heat instead of electricity. Commissioned at Kalpakkam by the Department of Atomic Energy, the facility uses heat from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor to drive a thermochemical process for hydrogen generation. Unlike conventional electrolysis, this method relies on the Copper-Chlorine cycle, significantly reducing electricity use while enabling continuous, 24/7 hydrogen production. While still a demonstration project, it signals a new direction where nuclear energy plays a central role in India’s net-zero ambitions.
