El Niño and La Niña are climate patterns over the Pacific Ocean that affect weather patterns around the world. The heavy rainfall and flooding in large parts of KwaZulu-Natal, are a direct result of the La Niña climate pattern. Environmentalists have warned of the severe impact of changes in global temperatures across the world, leaving vulnerable regions such as Sub-saharan Africa, the most devastated.
